"Once a soldier, always a soldier"

The movie begins in Vietnam in 1969. The war is ending and two soldiers meet up with each other, Luc Devereaux and Andrew Scott. Scott has totally lost his mind and Luc tries to stop him. Both die for their troubles. The military come and gather the dead bodies and ship them in ice back to a laboratory. All of the soldiers are told that these people are MIA and their bodies were never found so no questions would be asked. Fast forward to present day. The Universal Soldiers are now part machine and part human. Their memories are supposed to be erased now that they are government property but both Luc and Scott start having flashbacks. A young reporter, Veronica, and her camara man are out to get the story behind the new soldiers. She sees the bodies being shipped in ice and one of the bodies rising out of the ice, She freaks out and the two of them run. They crash the car and then Andrew Scott kills the camaraman. Luc remembers what atrocities Scott had committed in Vietnam in this point and he knocks Scott. Veronica pulls the camara off of Luc's head and they get in the car and speed away. Luc starts overheating and needs to cool down, all the time unaware that the military has a tracking device planted in him and know exactly where he is. After she gets him cooled down, he has her look for and remove the tracking device. Meanwhile, Scott remembers exactly who he is and starts going about his psychotic way kililng anyone in his path. Now Luc must finish the mission he was doing when he died, stop Scott at all costs before he kills everyone. Can he do it?

This is one of my favorite Lundgren movies although there was way too much Van Damme in my opinion. I am not a big Van Damme fan. Every tone he uses, sounds the same. There is no feeling in his voice, it sounds monotone all of the time. He couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. Now Lundgren, that is a different story. His performance as this deranged Vietnam Sargent was outstanding. I believe my favorite part was his speech in the grocery store when he brought his dead soldiers in to try to replenish them in the freezers. It showed the true essence of the character. As far as Van Damme, I guess I would have to say my favorite scene with him was when he was first learning what food was again in the diner. The "I just want to eat" scene flowed well with his monotone voice.

Personally, I think this movie would have been better with another starring action hero besides Van Damme. I hated him being the title character. His acting dragged down the entire movie. There are parts that I just had to fast forward because he was so annoying. Lundgren's performance deserves an 8 at the least but with the bad acting, I would have to rate this movie:

I rate this movie: 6
