"Tales from the Darkside" was always one of my favorite television shows as a child. When this film came out, it too was and still is one of my favorites. It's like reading a Stephen King book with lots of different stories which I love! The first story and the one that continues off and on throughout the whole movie is the tale of Timmy, a little boy who came to collect on his sick brother's paper route. A witch traps him and tries to fatten him up so she can eat him. She gives the boy an old book to read to pass the time. The book is entitled, "Tales from the Darkside". He begins to tell the witch stories to delay her cooking him. The first story is about a mummy, "Lot 249" that is delivered to a misunderstood and strange history student at a college. He is cheated out of an award and accused of a crime. Yet when he opens Lot 249, he finds a scroll that can help him get revenge on all of the ones that have hurt him. The result is deadly. The second story Timmy tells is about an evil cat that an old man believes is killing everyone around him...and he is next. He hires a hit man to take it out. Is the cat really "A Cat from Hell" or is it just a lovable kitty that the man won't be able to kill? Timmy tells a third story about a struggling artist who meets with a deadly gargoyle in an alley behind the bar where he drinks. It kills a man and tells Preston, the artist, that as long as he doesn't tell anyone of what he has seen, he can live. Preston agrees. But...loose lips sink ships. Timmy has kept the witch away this long. But he is just a little boy, how can he get away from the witch? Watch to find out!
Again, I have always enjoyed this film. I loved the series and I originally picked this movie up because Christian Slater was starring in the story, "Lot 249". But every story was wonderful! Believe it or not, the only story that I did not care for was the one written by Stephen King about "The Cat From Hell". I guess because I own so many black cats that I hated to see yet another cat made evil. It was great but it was my least favorite. I had taped this from cable but a great little video store in town was selling a copy in town called "On Location Video". I paid $3.99 for a classic movie! Let me give it a plug here, if you live in Picayune, Mississippi, check out this place. It's by the River Ridge Winn Dixie. It's the best little undiscovered place! But anyway, back to the movie. The last story "The Lover's Vow" was my absolute favorite and it was horrible the way it ended and a little shocking if you have never seen it before. Even though I did not care for the cat story, I still give this movie a perfect rating.
I rate this film: 10
