"Death is only the beginning"

That phrase truly encompasses what this movie is all about. The movie begins in Ancient Egypt in Hammunaptra where Imhotep, Pharoah Seti I's high priest, is having an affair with the Pharoah's mistress. When he finds out, they kill him and then his mistress, Anck Su Namun, kills herself as Imhotep has promised to resurrect her. As Imhotep escapes and does try to rescue her, Seti's forces capture him and sentence he and his servants to death. His servants are to be mummified alive. But he is to endure the worst death punishment of all, the Hom-Dai. His tongue is cut off, he is wrapped in mummy bandages and he is placed in a tomb with flesh eating beetles. His tomb was locked with a key and it was prophesied that if he ever came back as the undead, he would also be a flesh eater. Time fast forwards and former French Legion soldier, Rick O' Connell is teamed with Evelyn and her brother Jonathan who are desperate to reach Hammunaptra for the sake of history and to find two of the most ancient books buried there. Three Americans and Beni, Rick's former partner, are also trying to reach the same place except they think that they are going to find lots of treasure. The Magi, the Pharoah's bodyguards, try to keep them away, but to no avail. One night as they are resting from their dig at Hammunaptra, Evelyn reads from the book and the Mummy is reawakened to wreak havoc on the world. Can they stop him before its too late?

The first time I watched this movie, I hated it. I thought it was going to be more horror and less comedy. However, my sister talked me into going back to the theater and watching it a second time later. The second time I kind of liked it and it is now one of my favorite movies. Sure, when you hear a title like "The Mummy" you think horror. There is some horror but Brendan Fraser adds his own brand of comedy to the mix by breaking the tension when it gets high. And although Fraser is one of my favorite actors, my favorite part of the movie did not involve him at all. I loved the beginning where the audience got to see how Imhotep became what he was. The story of ancient Egypt kept me so interested right from the first time I saw it because I love reading that type of material. It was graphic yet had a lot of emotion to it.

Overall, I really have enjoyed this movie since the second time I watched it. It has every element anyone could want in a movie. I really cannot think of anything that I would change.
