Where do you go when you die?
That is exactly the question that cartoonist Stu Miley never considered until he found out the answer. Stu is a highly successful cartoonist and creator of popular cartoon character, Monkeybone. He should be happy with all of the success but he hates some of the things that comes with it such as merchandising and he does not seem to be very at home at parties. As a party rages on inside of a building in his honor, he is presented with merchandising and he still does not want to talk about it with his agent, Herb. He and Julie sneak out to leave only to find that Herb has filled his car with every kind of merchandise that would fit. As Stu and Julie start to leave with the car loaded down, an inflatable version of Monkeybone inflates in the car and causes Julie and Stu to crash the car. Stu drifts into a coma and is under a very long time. When he "wakes up" he is in another land where Monkeybone is more than just an imaginary character who exists in only his head. He goes into a bar and has a "comatini" while watching all of the strange characters. The bartender recognizes Stu from his nightmares. Stu finds out that land thrives on people's nightmares and his nightmares are the worst of all and they enjoy watching. Monkeybone runs rampant through the land causing havoc and before long, he betrays his own creator by skipping town and stealing Stu's body on Earth right before Stu's sister is ready to turn the life support off of Stu. As she does, Monkeybone awakens in Stu's body. Julie is happy at first but she realizes that this new Stu is not the one she wanted to marry and that something is terribly wrong. Stu pleads his case to Death while in her land to please let him see Julie one more time. Because Monkeybone has his body, he has to use a loner but she grants him one more chance to see his love. Will she know it is him? Can he save her from the likes of Monkeybone?
Once again, this is a brilliant Brendan Fraser film. This man is truly talented when it comes to comedy. I think I was laughing almost this whole movie. There was like maybe two sad parts and the rest was just great comedy. Not to mention that the special effects were incredible! My favorite part of the movie is when Stu takes on the "loner" body and runs to catch up with Monkeybone. Monkeybone is making a complete fool of Stu as he struts his respective stuff. Stu is trying to get there and save his girlfriend from making the biggest mistake of her life. There is some tension among the laughs. Nothing makes me happier than to have more than one element of the different genres of movies in one film. I won't give away the ending in case you haven't seen this one, but if you haven't, you need to! It rates right up there with Fraser's "Bedazzled"!
I rate this film: 9
