Life or eternal life? It's your choice.....

The movie begins with an interviewer interviewing the vampire Louis in modern times. Louis says he has not been human in over 200 years.In 1791, he was master of a large plantation. His wife and child died in childbirth and he was ready to die after they did. Lestat could feel his lust for death and acted upon it. He gave Louis the choice: death or eternal life with no chance of death. Louis chose eternal life when faced with the decision. He describes the world as different when looking through vampire eyes. The movie also does away with the myths of killing a vampire with a stake through the heart or frightening them away with crucifixes. He says the only necessities to a vampire are his coffin and blood. He goes onto detail the gruesome conquests of blood that he and Lestat had together and then finding out that he does not want to kill things to live and depends on animals for a while. After Louis is upset when he accidentally kills a servant, he burns his estate to the ground and he and Lestat begin to wander through countries. The Plague struck one country while they were out and Lestat made another protege other than Louis, a little girl named Claudia whose parents had died in the Plague. Finally he found someone after his own heart. But would someone after his own heart destroy the one that made her?

I remember watching this movie in college with a roommate. We turned off all the lights and watched it because we thought it was going to be so scary. If you are looking for a scary movie, this is not it! It was more bloody than scary. I can't even think of one part in this movie that scared me. It was interesting to hear Anne Rice's take on vampires on film (I had already read the book, of course!) and frankly I liked the book better than the film as always!

The one relationship I did find interesting were those between Claudia, Lestat, and Louis. At first, she was more like Lestat. Cold and calculating when it came to killing a victim. She reminded him of himself and he taught her to be just like him. Yet, as she grew older she despised Lestat for making her what she was and fell more for Louis. Louis was the one she loved and because of him, he was her ultimate downfall.

The special effects in this movie were midway. They were not anything outstanding but they were not really bad. My favorite part is when Claudia turned into the vampire. I loved the way they did her hair!

One thing that really turned me off about this movie was Tom Cruise. He was nothing like I thought Lestat would look. I don't know who I would have chosen during that time, but I know it would not have been Cruise. He made Lestat look weak with his weak-willed face. He was the only character I did not think the actor fit. For casting Lestat, I must give those people the patented Blyss RAZZ!

Overall, this movie was nothing like I thought it would be and it was really disappointing. I give the book itself a 9 but the movie only rated.....
