I put a spell on you and now you're mine!
The film begins in the 17th century. A young boy wakes up and finds his sister gone. He suspects the witch sisters and sees a cnjuring in the woods and follows it to his sister. Before he can do anything, the witches suck the life out of Emily and they turn Thackery (her brother) into a cat for his troubles and he will live forever as long as his spirit is trapped in the cat's body. The Sanderson sisters, Mary, Winnie, and Sarah are three very powerful witches and they are caught but no one ever knows what happened to Thackery. As they are about to be hanged, they place a curse on the town and they will return. Centuries later, a teen, new in Salem from California, hears the Sanderson story and is skeptical. He gets teased some and he takes it out on his little sister, Dani. Max takes Dani trick or treating and ends up at Allison's house. Max has a total crush on Allison and Dani teases him. Max wants to go to the Sanderson witch's house. Dani is reluctant but finally agrees and the three go. As the legend goes, there is a black flame candle which will resurrect dead spirits if lit by a virgin. Mac lights it and the witches return! The witches try to take Dani and a cat helps the kids stop the witches from taking her. He is a talking cat named Binx. To release his spirit, he needs to help defeat the witches and he is willing to help the kids. But they must do it before the sunrises aon November 1. Can they make it before the sun rises? Or is the whole town and earth doomed if the witches are allowed to live?
This is one of my favorite Halloween movies. I guess because it has the Halloween element without being too scary or gory. The Sanderson sisters are so hilarious themselves. They are almost like a female version of the 3 stooges or something. There were many underlying themes that were stressed in this but above all, the bond between siblings was stressed most of all. Max showed his love for Dani by saving her life. It also showed how strong their bond was by what he did for her, all of the little things he did. In the same way Thackery tried to save his sister's life before the witches killed her. It was definitely a lesson many children need to learn, how to get along. One of my favorite parts of this movie was when Winnie awakened Billy Butcherson and he finally got his mouth open. What he said to her had me rolling on the floor! This movie is a great movie for about ages 7 and up. Comedy and a lesson learned!
I rate this film: 8
