A celestial love....

Sam Wheat and Molly Jensen have just moved into their own place together for the first time. Sam feels like he finally has everything he could want in life: a great job at the financial firm he works at, a wonderful girlfriend, and a dependable best friend. But as he lies in bed with Molly, he wonders if it will all last. He worries that when everything is good that he may lose it all. He starts having trouble at work when he notices there is too much money in some of his accounts he is working after he gives Carl his codes to get into accounts. He changed the codes because he seemed to suspect that the money being put into the accounts was not an accident. That night Sam and Molly go out to see a play and they are robbed. The perpetrator hits Molly and Sam attacks him and is killed for his valiant effort. But instead of moving on, he is stuck in this world. He learns who killed him and why eventually and also that the person is still after his girlfriend. The only one that can hear Sam is a woman who is a phony spiritual advisor named Oda Mae Brown. When he starts talking for real, she freaks but he is insistant that she will help him or Molly will die. Molly is reluctant to listen but Oda Mae gets the message to Molly about the killer and that Sam was murdered. Molly tries to go to the police but they don't believe her. Not even her husband's best friend Carl will believe her. She notices that Carl starts behaving rather mysteriously since Sam's death. Who was in on the murder of Sam Wheat? Was it random or was it planned? Who exactly was involved?

Well, I think that is one of the longest intros I have ever written for a movie on this site. The reason for that is because there is so much good stuff in this movie, I want to talk about it all but I don't want to give it all away! This is the best role that Patrick Swayze has ever performed in his career. By himself, his dramatic scenes were outstanding and he deserved an award for it (although passed up). Put him together with Whoopi Goldberg and you had a terrific tandem of comedy added in with the drama. I loved the scenes where Oda Mae is just starting to hear Sam. I laughed and laughed when I watched this again after a long time. I had two favorite scenes that seem to stand out from the rest with Whoopi and Swayze. One is when all of the spirits are coming into Oda Mae's shop after they hear of what she has done for Sam. Sam comes back and starts talking to her. She is talking to him and not listening to one of the other spirits so the spirit jumps into her body. The conversation that transpires between the spirit and his wife is funny and then what happens after that. The other scene in the movie that made me laugh hard is when Oda Mae is refusing to help Sam and he starts singing "I'm Henry the VIII, I am" until she agrees. There are so many great scenes with this terrific pair, I could write a novel just on this movie! I think the Goldberg/Swayze scenes were even better than the Moore/Swayze scenes. But that is just me.

This movie is highly recommended and one of my top picks. If you have already seen it, you know. If you haven't, shame on you!

I rate this film: 10
