"Once the sun sets, evil comes out!"
The movie begins by explaining about the Book of the Dead and the things contained inside of it. The movie then goes onto pretend that the first one never happened and tries to fool the viewer into thinking that Ash and his girlfriend Linda were the only people to go up to that cabin and all of the evil things that happened occurred to only them. Then the daughter of the scientist who was translating the Book of the Dead that died, supposedly, shows up with her boyfriend. They have more pages of the Book of the Dead with them that can help Ash stop the evil running rampant in the woods. As Ash's sanity nears snapping by the evil happening to him, Annie and her boyfriend get help from two redneck strangers on getting to the cabin where Ash is because they think Annie's father and mother are still there.When Annie gets to the cabin, Ash nearly shoots her because of all of the evil he has had to deal with that night. Annie thinks Ash has killed her parents when she sees him with a gun and covered in blood. After they are attacking Ash, they hear her father on tape talking about how her mother turned into a demon because of the evil in the woods and he had to kill her. He buried her in the basement. The mother attacks her and tries to fool Annie into thinking she is her mother who is still alive and not a demon. It then attacks Annie's boyfriend and Ash has to kill him. But if Annie's mother's spirit is still in the house, couldn't her father's be too? Would he know how to stop the evil or had he succumbed to it himself? Watch and find out!
This sequel in no way outdid the first movie. The scenes were more funny than scary where as the first Evil Dead had me so creeped out that I was jumpy when it was over because I was alone in the house. I felt insulted to think that the people who wrote this would think that a viewer would just forget the first one and buy into the story presented in the second one like the first movie never happened. I really hated that. It's like undermining the memories of horror movie fanatics such as myself. They shouldn't have even went there. If it's a sequel, it should be related to the first one. Other horror franchises have made the same mistake with their second or third movie not relating to the rest of them like Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween. This movie can be lumped into the same category with the second Nightmare on Elm Street and the third Halloween. Nothing at all is relavant in these movies.Most of the screams sound fake in this movie too. The screams were so real in the first Evil Dead that my stomach would turn. Also, why are there always two stupid rednecks in these horror films? It's becoming like a staple for horror or something. It sickens me. There were only two parts of the movie that I liked. The beginning where they explained about the Book of the Dead and the graphics and pictures they showed. That was really cool and modern for the date in which it was made. I also enjoyed the part where Annie's mother came back and was trying to trick her. That really played on her sympathies and made her want to open the cellar for her but she was not fooled and that part showed Annie's strength.
Overall, this movie was not what it was cracked up to be. I expected to be terrified with even more horror than the last. Instead, this movie turned into somewhat of a laughfest with very few entertaining parts to it in the horror department. Therefore, I have to give it the grade of: 5.
