Here comes Darth!

Episode 5 in the Star Wars movies tells a story. Imperial forces are chasing the rebels throughout the galaxy. Luke Skywalker and his friends are responsible for reassembling the rebels on the Ice Planet Hoth. However, Darth Vader has only one thing on his mind despite what the emperor tells him: find Luke Skywalker. Luke gets injured and lost on Hoth in a snowstorm after a meteor lands and Han Solo goes out to look for him. By morning, he is able to bring him back but now before Luke has a vision of Ben and he tells him to go to the Dagobah system to seek Yoda. Shortly after they are rescued, a probe droid of the empire is discovered and it self destructs itself. The rebels know they have been discovered. As the ships begin to descend on the planet, the rebels flee and plan to meet at the rendezvous point. But Luke Skywalker has other plans as he and R2D2 descend towards the Dagobah system to meet with the Jedi trainer, Yoda. Meanwhile, the emperor informs Darth Vader that they have a new enemy at hand, Luke Skywalker. Darth says he is harmless but the emperor says the force is too strong in him to not be a threat. Darth vows to bring Luke over to the dark side.

As always, this is one of the great movies of the 1980's. I absolutely loved Star Wars when I was a kid and I love it even more now that I am grown. Although out of the three films, for some reason, I liked this one less than the other two. The film looked twice as good after it was cleaned up in the re-release, it still did not have the same appeal that the others did. I guess it is because this film was more about Luke and less about Han as the other two are. In this movie, my favorite parts were the ones with Yoda. It was quite funny when he was playing with Luke's lamp and interesting to watch as he trained him reluctantly and only under Ben's urging. What really disturbed me about this film, however, was the end when Luke kept questioning why Ben did not tell him that Darth Vader was actually his father. As a child, I wondered the same thing but as an adult, I just have to say, "Duh!". The father that Luke would have known and respected was dead because he had been turned over to the Dark Side and Ben did not want the same fate to befall Luke. Sometimes characters just do not reason!

Well, above all else, I really enjoyed this movie despite some of the quirks. I would recommend it to any great science fiction fan that has not already watched it. If you have, go see it again.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this movie a 8.
