Death really does become her!

Helen Sharp and Madeline Ashton are old friends....and old rivals. At the beginning of the film, Helen brings her fiancé, Ernest Menville, the world's best plastic surgeon, to meet her "old friend" Madeline Ashton. She says she needs to see if he can pass the "Madeline Ashton test" because so many of her old boyfriends left her for Madeline after they met Madeline. Ernest drools over Madeline back in her dressing room and Helen gets very upset after they leave. Ernest assures Helen that he has no interest in Madeline whatsoever. But later, instead of Helen marrying Ernest, we see Madeline marrying Ernest.

After Ernest and Madeline's marriage, Helen loses it. She is an overweight nasty woman with tons of cats. She gets evicted from her apartment and then it looks like she is committed to a mental hospital shortly after. Everyday that she is there she goes on and on about Madeline Ashton and how she hates her and what Madeline has done to her. Everyone is sick of it. The doctor tells her to forget about Madeline and something finally connects in Helen's mind.

Seven years later from that time, Helen sends Madeline and Ernest inviations to her book party after she has her first book published. We see how unhappy Ernest has become in his marriage to Madeline and how dissatisfied Madeline is with her marriage to Ernest. Madeline is a beauty nightmare. They decide to go to the book party.

When they get to the party, they see a new version of Helen. She is 50 and she looks like she is 23. Madeline then starts to get worried about losing Ernest to her even though she does not seem to really love him anymore. She just does not want Helen to win. Helen tells them both seperately that she does not blame them but blames the other. Madeline wants to know what Helen's secret is. But instead, she just gets depressed and tries to get another facelift after she had just had one three weeks before now. Instead, the head of the clinic offers Madeline a card with a name and address on it: Lisel Van Rhuman. He says Lisel can help her. Madeline thinks that Lisel must be a freak and tears the card in half and puts it into her purse. Madeline does not think about it again until her twenty-something year old lover rejects her and then she decides to pay Lisel a visit. Lisel offers her eternal youth. But will she accept?

"Death Becomes Her" is a very inventive film! The special effects were great, especially for 1992. Out of Helen and Madeline, I think I liked Madeline the best, even though she was the worst witch of all. Meryl Streep is one of my favorite actresses and she played the role of Madeline Ashton so well! My favorite part is when Madeline discovers that her head is twisted around backwards after she falls down the stairs. That is so hilarious! There are many laughs in this film so if you are a comedy fan, go rent this one! I would recommend it without a second thought.
