You've got 18 hours to save the world......

You've got 18 hours to save the world. What do you do? When a meteor shower knocks out a routine space mission, NASA begins to investigate. Unfortunately they do not find out in time. Another meteor shower hits New York City and demolishes it. After this tragedy, they find out that those large asteroids that hit NYC were only the beginning. A meteor the size of Texas is on its way to Earth and will cause the worst parts of the Bible to occur: Armageddon. They only have one hope. To drill a hole in the middle of the meteor and launch a nuclear weapon off inside of it. To do that they will need the best hard core driller there is: Harry Stamper, and they will not stop until they get him. But Harry has problems of his own. Harry finds out that his daughter has been sleeping with A.J. Frost, one of the roughnecks on his oil rig for a number of months. He is upset about that and he is upset because A.J. is always causing trouble when he takes "the law into his own hands" and goes over Harry's head when it is Harry's company. Finally he faces the final straw when A.J. does something that endangers the lives of the crew and potential investors. Harry fires him just as the military lands and brings Harry and his daughter to NASA. Truman, a leading official at NASA, explains the situation to him and Harry reluctantly agrees to do it on one condition: that he does not have to take the astronauts with him except to fly the ships. He wants his own drilling crew, including A.J. to go with him. Will Harry and his men be able to destroy the meteor in time before the meteor destroys mankind as we know it?

I went to see this movie like three times before it left the theater! Why did I like it so much? Action + emotion = one great movie!!! The movie begins with action as a civilian star watcher contacts NASA when he views a meteor right before a meteor shower hits NYC. I have to think that this movie probably would have been delayed in coming out had it been released this past year because the first meteor shower that hit the Earth hit NYC and the Twin Towers were shown. The special effects were outstanding especially when Shanghai was blown up! It gave you an experience of what it may do to the Earth if such a meteor shower was going to occur. There was also a special relationship between A.J. and Harry. Even though it seemed that they were rivals in the beginning, at the end you learn that was not the way they really felt about each other. Also I enjoyed the sweet love story of Grace and A.J. Even though her father objected of who she was with, she still insisted on being with A.J. There is one part towards the end of the movie that tore my heart out after they were on the meteor. Action, humor, and drama makes this a great film! I cannot think of anything that would have made this better.
