Alright, there has been a lot of hype about this film. "It's the new 'There's Something About Mary'". Well, I must admit these two movies aren't all the much alike. Yes, they both talk about kind of crude things, but this movie isn't as silly as There's Something About Mary and it's more crude and graphic. I thought that TSAM was aimed towards a male audience, but this one is much more so.

The male characters are believable and well rounded. However, the female characters presented are not believable and are never seen in the real world. Ok, I know that the movie is ridiculous comedy, so it's over the top. I'm not denying that. However, as unlikely as it is to see a guy screwing an apple pie, it's even more unlikely to hear a real band nerd say, "I stuck my flute up my p***y". Sorry, not going to happen. First, it's very doubtful you would ever hear a girl say that word, and even more unlikely if it was a repressed band nerd. This is obviously some guy's interpretation on what girls are like. Virtually all of the females in the movie are ridiculous.

The choir singing bit in this movie is too over the top and comes off campy. The movie also goes for the extreme digust humour which kind of turns your stomach. Again, this is aimed at a more male audience. i.e. the beer drinking scene.

Those are my main complaints. This movie does get a 2 and one half star for the fact that even though some of the humor is predictable/formulaic/revolting....it still makes you laugh. There are some original touches too. I especially liked the "Mrs. Robinson" scene. The inclusion of the Simon and Garfunkle song topped it off well.

I also gave it the score I did because even though the female characters were extremely lacking, the male characters were well thought out and quite funny. The acting all around was good too, both male and female. There are a bunch of fresh faces in this film that I expect to see more of. Also, the more I see of Natasha Lyonne, the more I think she really is a good actress. You might remember her from Krippendorf's Tribe or Slums of Beverly Hills.

So basically, if you're a guy you should really like this film, if you're a girl you might think it's ok. Be prepared for stupid, sick humour when you go to the theater though. If you're expecting There's Something About Mary, you'll be disappointed.
