PIRATES OF THE CARIBBENA: CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is one of three movies from Disney based on a popular theme-park attraction. The first being THE COUNTRY BEARS, and the second being the upcoming THE HAUNTED MANSION. Now, BEARS sucked, and MANSION looks okay, so that left me with a question, Was this movie going to suck, or rock? Simple as that. I am extremely happy to report that this movie blew me right out of the water with it's action, effects, characters, and story.
PIRATES starts off with young Elizabeth Swan coming across a young, waterlogged Will Tuners. She snags a piece of gold from around his neck, to not make him look like a pirate. Cut to at least ten years later, both of the kids are grown up, and the know-grown, super hot Elizabeth (Kiera Knightly) still has the gold. Enter Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp at his best), a sun-baked pirate with a lot of eyeliner. It seems that he has come to port to steal a ship and muster up a crew. He gets arrested and thrown in the stockade. At that point, the goods really get going. Pirates come in, kidnap Elizabeth and blow up a bunch of things. We learn that the pirates are cursed, and that hey need all the gold to become uncursed. Jack and an older Will (Orlando Bloom), set off to rescue Elizabeth.
PIRATES really suprised me in terms of action and adventure. It was full of it. So many things blew up and there were many swordfights ith cursed pirates. The effects rocked the house, turning he pirates into walking skeletons in the moonlight. But nothing could possibly compare to the preformance of one Mr. Johhny Depp.
Depp rocks the house as the perma-drunk, sun-baked, willy Jack Sparrow. Nothing can compare to how cool thsi dude is. He has all the best lines, the best action and the best fights. I would love to see a movie just about this guy. Aside from Depp, Orlando, Kiera, and Geoffry Rush all do solid jobs, especially Rush as the crazed pirate Cpatain Barbossa.
PIRATES succeeds at being one of the coolest adventure movies this summer, gives us one of the coolest haracters in recent history, and proves to us that althouh Disney failed in making a decent movie with THE COUNTRY BEARS, they can still save THE HAUNTED MANSION, especially if it's as cool as this PEARL. |
