Kill Bill--Vol. 1 (****):
Okay, so I gave this flick four stars. Am I being too easy on it? Not at all. This one DESERVES it. I loved this flick, every gory second of it. THIS is filmmaking, people! Awesome film. We hear heavy breathing, a black screen. It opens in black and white. We see Uma Thurman's face, she's bloody, and says something to the extent of..."It's yours." Gunshot to her head. The first...what, minute?, of Kill Bill, and it's got your attention. What follows is 100 minutes of..everything. Wow.
This is, essentially, a revenge flick. Uma's pissed and wants to kill those people, members of the DiVAS (Deadly Viper Assassination Squad). One thing I liked: When 'The Bride' utters her name, it's bleeped out. Huh? There's something else. She's known as Black Mamba. So anyway, the story's told in chapters, none in order, that detail her killings, her training, and confrontations with several characters. Pay CLOSE attention, or else you WILL be confused. She's got a list with her, there's 5 or 6 names on it, and the final one...BILL. We know it's coming, we just have to wait to see it. Oh yeah, and as for Bill, he's not really in this movie. We hardly ever see his face, and when we do, it's not for very long. Let's wait for Volume 2. On to that. The film just..ends. Not without a cliffhanger, though. Why did they split it in two, you ask? Because this movie would have been too 'intense' to see it in ONE sitting. Eh, oh well, it's something to look forward to. April 16 is coming!!!
How's the action? It's GREAT. QT's love for cinema is evident in EVERY fight scene, and it's awesome to watch. The long fight in The House of Blue Leaves will hold your attention like nothing else. At one point, they move into a room (there's hundreds of guys vs. one girl with a badass sword) and the lights are off. So what you see is the silhoutte of the 'The Bride' along with dozens of guys, squaring off against her. It's brilliantly shot, and was a sight to see. The fight between Uma and Lucy Liu is great, too. What ends up happening is just...wow. The first fight scene we see is great, too. It's VERY random, and certainly unexpected. Ah, this movie is great. It's stylish, too. Creative camera shots, pans, and great cinematography. I feel like watching this again...
So yeah, there you go. I LOVED this movie, and can't wait for it to come out on DVD. I suggest you go rent it, or even BUY it...it's THAT good. Of course, that is, if you can handle FOUNTAINS of blood. Yes, the blood. There's lots of it. Didn't bother me one bit, though. If you're squeamish, this MAY not be the film for you. Anyway, if you're not, watch it!
