REVIEW BY CATHERINE KRUMMEY
8 Mile may have been made to draw box-office bucks from the young crowd, but it also proved to have cinematic substance, which makes it more than your run-of-the-mill scenario of a popular music star attempting to go gold on screen. Mile is set in 1995 Detroit and centers on the career of struggling young white rapper Bunny Rabbit (sound familiar?). Eminem's "B Rabbit," directed by L.A. Confidential's Hanson, gets support from Basinger (Rabbit's mother), Phifer (best friend) and Murphy (love interest). Em has proven himself a real actor, although it would be interesting to see him play someone not so close-to-home. Phifer (NBC's ER) was equally great as the person who pushes Rabbit to succeed. Basinger, who hasn't had a hit since L.A. Confidential, found the right flick to latch onto. Her performance was very believeable, very real. Far less impressive was Murphy's performance: she was hugely better in Don't Say a Word, Girl Interrupted and even Clueless. From the grit to the gold, 8 Mile is a down-to-earth story that is a must-see for audiences young and old.
