Understanding Mouse Color Standards
Self
Self mice have the same
coat color throughout, from the belly, to the feet, ears, and tail. Each
strand of hair is one color from base to tip. |

Standard
|
Beige
ce/ce with A/~, a/~ or a/a |
AFRMA, FSPM, RMFE
A warm grayish-tan colored
mouse with black eyes. |
Black
a/a B/~ C/~ D/~ P/~ super black: ae/ae B/~ C/~ D/~
P/~ |
AFRMA, FSPM, LSCMRC, RMFE
A dense, lustrous black
mouse with black eyes. |
Blue
a/a B/~ C/~ d/d P/~ |
AFRMA, FSPM, LSCMRC, RMFE
A medium slate blue mouse
with black eyes. |
Bone
A/~ or a/ab/b ce/c D/~ P/~ or p/p |
FSPM
A pale cream colored mouse
different from stone, ivory, or bone, having pink or black eyes. |
Champagne
a/a b/b C/~ D/~ p/p or sometimes: a/a b/b C/~ d/d p/p |
AFRMA, FSPM, LSCMRC, RMFE
A pink-eyed mouse with a
warm pinkish beige colored coat, similar to champagne. Occasionally a
pink-eyed lilac mouse has the requisite color. |
Chocolate
a/a b/b C/~ D/~ P/~ sometimes a/a bc/bc C/~ D/~
P/~ and a/a B/~ cch/c D/~ P/~ or a/a B/~ cch/ce
D/~ P/~ |
AFRMA, FSPM, LSCMRC, RMFE
A mouse the color of dark
chocolate (not milk chocolate) with no hint of red. The RMFE allows Ruby
colored eyes, but other clubs only consider black eyes. bc the cordovan
gene produces a deep lustrous chocolate colored mouse. cch/c and cch/ce
with a B/~ gene combination results in a “mock” chocolate where a black mouse
has been diluted by the c-locus recessives into a chocolate color that is
often mealy, but which can be quite beautiful. |
Coffee
A/~ or a/a ce/ce OR a/a cch/c |
AFRMA, FSPM, RMFE
A coffee colored mouse is
a very pale brown color with a hint of gray, like coffee with cream. Black
eyes. |
Cream
A/~ or a/ab/b ce/c D/~ P/~ or p/p Or Ay/~ and P or p Or a/a B/~ C/~ D/~ e/e and P or p |
AFRMA, LSCMRC, RMFE
A pale yellow-colored
mouse similar in color to vanilla ice cream. Eye color black for the AFRMA,
and pink or black for RMFE and LSCMRC. FSPM
A rich pastel yellow
colored mouse with pink or black eyes. Ay/~ b/b C/~
d/d P/~ or p/p |
Dove
a/a B/~ C/~ D/~ p/p |
AFRMA
See Lilac FSPM, LSCMRC, RMFE
A pink-eyed black mouse,
with the black diluted to a soft dove gray color. |
Fawn
Ay/~ b/b C/~ D/~ p/p |
AFRMA
A medium orange-colored
mouse with either pink or black eyes. A pink-eyed mouse with a
deep tan coloring. |
Gold
Ay/~ with P/~ or p/p Or a/a e/e |
AFRMA, RMFE
An orangey yellow colored
mouse with color similar to gold metal, and eyes that are either pink or
black. |
Ivory
Ay/~ B/~ ce/ce D/~
p/p |
AFRMA
A black-eyed white mouse
that has a pale yellow tinge to its fur. |
Lilac
a/a b/b C/~ d/d P/~ |
AFRMA
See Dove for
description FSPM, LSCMRC, RMFE
A soft gray-colored
black-eyed mouse with a slight pink or brown cast. |
Orange
Ay/~ b/b C/c D/d P/~ (p/p) |
AFRMA
A bright orange colored
mouse with any color eye. |
Red
Ay or A/a b/b C/~ D/~ P/~ |
AFRMA, FSPM, LSCMRC
A rich deep orange-red
colored mouse with black eyes and a coat clear of sootiness. |
Silver
a/a B/~ C/~ d/d p/p |
AFRMA, FSPM, LSCMRC, RMFE
A light gray colored mouse
with a coat so light as to resemble the color of a newly minted coin. There
should be no hint of lilac or any sort of warm cast. Pink eyed (LSCMRC allows
black eyed mice). |
Black Eyed White
See BEW Recipe Page for details on Genetics |
AFRMA, FSPM, LSCMRC, RMFE
A clear marking-free white
coat without hint of shading. Black eyes. |
Pink Eyed White
c/c (occasionally can be achieved with
other genes) |
AFRMA, FSPM, LSCMRC, RMFE
A clear marking-free white
coat without hint of shading. Pink eyes. Also known as albino. |
Ruby Eyed White
cr/cr |
FSPM
Pure white mouse with deep
ruby colored eyes, markedly darker than the pink of an albino mouse, but not
the black of a black eyed white mouse. |
Marked Mice
Marked mice have white and
at least one other color in their coat. |
|
Shaded Mice
Shaded mice have gradual
color gradations from one color to the next. |
|
Ticked Mice
Ticked mice have bars of
different colors on each hair strand. |
|
Silvered Mice
Silvered mice have silver
or white hairs mixed hairs of another color. |
|
Tan & Fox Mice
Tan and fox mice have tan
or white bellies, while their backs are the standard colors. |
