Do your "good scissors" take legs and walk off mysteriously? Do they come back looking like they've been with Tim the Toolman? Here's a sweet little way to mark your scissors so everyone will know to Leave Mama's Scissors Alone!! They also make cute little fobs for keyrings, too, or lots of other places you can think to hang something pretty.
Basically, it's a little ball. You make the
bottom "cup," the side, and then close the top. You
will quickly have your own neat ideas for making Fobs.
I like to work with rayon, but it is slippery!! Also, I use sc in
a spiral because it makes a tight "fabric" so your
padding does not poke through. You can work in separate rows too,
just make the increases and decreases in the appropriate places.
"Just
gimme the 'structions."
Your choice of fiber and hook. I used cotton size
10, no. 6 hook.
Start with normal loop on hook and a 4" tail of thread, it's useful in counting rows.
Bottom - to start the "cup"
Row 1 - ch2, 8 sc in first st, do not join = 8
sc
Now work in back loop only..
Row 2 - Making a
circle, and working over the tail thread to hide it and secure
the work, 2 sc in each sc around, do not join = 16 sc.
Note this point, it is the
beginning of row. The tail thread comes out behind the work at
this point. At end of each row, I like to pull the tail thread up
through a rear thread of the next sc on the work, to mark the
first st of each new row.
Row 3 - (sc, sc,
2sc) 5 times, 2sc, sc = 21 sc
Here I would pull tail
thread up through back of next sc, doing same for each row I
complete.
Row 4 - (sc, sc,
sc, sc, 2sc) 4 times, sc = 25 sc
This is the lower cup of the ball.
Side -
Row 5 -
For a plain ball shape, crochet a 2nd round of
25 sc.
If you add a 3rd round of sc, it's a little egg!
Or, at this point you could make a round of your favorite fancy
stitch, bullions or X-xtitches, or shells, or popcorns, whatever
you like.
Top - to close the top of the fob
Row 6 - (sc,
sc, sc, sc, dec) 4 times, sc = 21 sc
* dec = single crochet the next 2
stitches together, thereby decreasing the number of stitches in
the row
Row 7 - (sc, sc, dec) 5 times, sc = 16 sc
Row 8 - dec all
around = 8 sc
The resulting small hole in the work is where you stuff fiberfill
- or scented fiberfill ! - and fill out the form of the
ball or egg. Trim off the excess of the beginning tail thread.
Closing - You can now
cut the working thread about 4" long, run it through the remaining
stitches and draw up, finish off, and add a loop of thread,
yarn, or ribbon.
Or you can continue with making a crocheted cord by drawing up a loop in
every other sc around, crochet a cord 4" long, and join into
base of cord in top of fob. I use a modified Love Knot stitch for
my cord.
Embellishments
- Embroider flowers or designs, attach llittle crocheted motifs of
flowers and leaves, add charms, or "crochet embroider"
(this is attaching the thread, and chaining along in some
pattern, catching up a loop of the fob in various places).
Add little tassel if desired.
