Rocky Mountain Flowers

Western Anemone, Chalice Flower, or Towhead Babies
These Western Anemone were found in a wet meadow at the timberline in Alberta's Kananaskis Country.  Thousands of them spread across the meadow forcing their sharp stems out of the snow crusted earth of late spring to burst forth into these cream-white flowers.  Like a chalice the white flowers form a cup, the centre filled with gold -- a crown-shaped stamen.  On a flower in the top right hand corner is a fly, whose feet will soon be covered with pollen as it flitters from flower to flower. Because of the fuzzy appearance of the fruiting heads, these flowers also are called Towhead Babies
