William Cartwright
A traditional Chairman role, complete with gavel and bellowing voice.
Very important to the pace of the show. Interacts a great deal
with cast as ‘actors’ as well as the audience. Diction
vital, a often reads out large chunks of dialogue, particularly in
Act II. Ideally 35 plus in age.
Cedric Moncrieffe as the Reverend Crisparkle
Older character, 50 plus. Very sincere and genuine, is always
looking out for everyone’s ‘best interests’.
Alice Nutting As Edwin Drood
In the style of the period, a female plays a male role. A great
acting part, with singing. Is described as the ‘young
nephew’ so age can be flexible up to mid 30’s. No
one in the cast likes her and she is voted out as ‘dead’
in Act II. A strong presence and character projection required.
Deidre Prergrine as Rosa Bud
An English rose. Young(ish), sweet and virginal. Needs
a strong soprano voice. Betrothed to Edwin Drood.
Isabel Yearsley as Alice
Florence Gill as Beatrice
Best friends of Rosa. Featured singing and acting. All
three must be around the same age.
Janet Covenor as Helena Landless
Victor Grinstead as Neville Landless
Brother and sister from Ceylon. A great comic pair. Hammy
dark make up and even hammier Indian accent! Very strong actors
required. Age 30+
Angela Prystock as Princess Puffa
An opium smoking ‘Madam’. Very strong acting and
singing required. 40+ in age. Two featured songs.
Clive Paget as John Jasper
A brooding ‘Mr Rochester’ type character. Holds
a dark secret with Rosa Bud. Strong acting and tenor singing,
featured songs. 30+
Philip Bax as Bazzard
The butles. A hopeless B grader who milks what lines he has.
Has a song ‘Never the Luck’ where he tells of his sorrow
at never having a starring role. Must have excellent rapport
with the audience.
Ensemble
Around 10 required. Some minor roles to come from ensemble cast
