Oyamada Manta is scared out of his wits when he saw a boy hanging out with spirits at a cemetery in Tokyo. The next day, the boy, Asakura You, shows up in his class. Both being able to see the spirits, they quickly become friends. Manta finds out that You is a Shaman, the link between the living and spirit worlds. At the cemetery, You gets Amidamaru, a very powerful samurai, to be his primary spirit. Soon, many more Shamans are gathering in Tokyo for the Shaman Fight to become Shaman King. You also wants to achieve this goal. But there are many who stand in his way....
