Ranma is a martial artist. But while training with his father in China, he fell into a spring. Legend has it that a young girl drowned in it and haunted it. Anyone who falls in it will turn into a girl if splashed with cold water and return to normal if splashed with hot water (don't ask me what if it were originally a girl...). He comes back to Japan and his father wants him to marry a daughter from the Tendou family, who also run a famous Dojo (karate school). Ranma's adventures begin...
