| Project RS4! |
| Well I finally begun working on my ultimate rs4! but the project almost got axed. Why? well there were several reasons: It was not until recently that I really started to understand how to work with these touring cars as they are quite a bit different from lets say an RC10 GT there are a lot of moving parts in this car and each one needs special tuning. So initially we had alot of problems with our cars (I own one and my brother owns one) mine will be the guennea pig for the project, then my brothers will be next. Anyway, our cars would not run right to save our lives. I said forget it we'll get rid of em, they are a pain in the butt. Then I stopped and thought, we already invested all this money, just to ax the project? Only because I'm too dumb to work with em? Dont think so. So once again I tore the whole car apart ( both of em) and started from scratch. This time I was on a mission, I totally rebuilt both of them as best as I could with the parts I had. I also ported and polished several engine parts. I spent a whole sunday afternoon just tuning linkages, brakes etc. on both cars. When we hit the street again it was amazing! The cars ran like new out of the box! Mine used too wimp out at higher rpm levels, well no more. Optimum performance from idle to W.O.T. It started cold with 3 pulls and 1 pull once it was warm. There was a minor issue with creeping in idle/brakes which also has been resolved now. Then I decided to move on with the project. I now installed a 2 speed transmission in my car. I estimate top speed (at a safe fuel/air mix) now around 50 to 55 miles per hour! It really hauls now! Nothing like when I bought them all broken down and detuned from ebay. Its much too fast to run to top speed on our street now. Here is a list of mods i've done sofar and some Pics! Installed HPI performance tuned Pipe Bigger fuel tubing cleaned whole engine and other moving parts (removed .15 to make room for - Yes. A .21 engine!) lubed all parts that needed it already had full ball bearings so no need for any(removed em and laid them in a plastic container with some motor oil in it) installed HPI heavy duty 2 speed transmission kit filled shocks with oil (90wt gear oil) replaced worn rear drive belt full tune up engine/drivetrain improved brake linkage response with fuel tubing modification installed a RS4 .21 conversion kit integy aluminum A arms front and back (purple) plastic ones broke in a crash recently gpm aluminum turnbuckle set (complete) national performance aluminum gearboxes front and rear installed HPI Savage .21 big block nitro engine More mods to come? You bet!! I'll have to find some way to measure my cars speed. Next Ill start to replace all that plastic crap with aluminum parts. ill have to switch to a lower gear ratio eventually as well. the lowest i can find. I have read an article in rc nitro magazine,they built a car that did 107 Mph using similar methods as i am doing here.. Now thats crazy! Imagine that, a hundred plus in a 1/10 r/c car!! Some real cars struggle with that! News: I got my hands on a .21 conversion Kit for the RS4! Watch out! I now have a hpi Savage 1/8 scale monster truck .21 big block engine which is cranking out 2.3hp! Can you say almost 5 times the power over the .15?? Update: the beast is built! i took it out....but like i thought the parts scattered!! due to a weakly set up on the clutch and flywheel. also i found debris in the engine. after cleaning the engine(teardown) and reworking the flywheel/clutch system. its bulleteproof now and ready for a second try. before the flywheel stripped (happened almost instantly) first impressions of this new machine were stunning, massive torque resulting in burnouts from hell!! however still i have no clue as to what top end speed or 100% acceleration look like. but my guess, it will be massive. all i need now is a another 1/2 inch copper elbow for a header and im ready to rock once again.. seethe new pics below to give you an idea of how big this new .21 powerplant really is. update: as of 2008 ihave not done anything in the way of r/c cars, but dont worry, all this has not gone the way of the dodo.. the rs4 and my other cars will be up and running in the not so far future. I miss my nitros...time to get em going again! |
