Eleven large islands make up more than 90% of the Philippine's 297,850 sqm. most of the 70 million Filipinos are of Malay descent. More than 90% are Christians, mainly Roman Catholic. Filipino(Pilipino) is the national language. English is widespread.
with a well-educated populace and considerable natural resources, the Philippines could be a success story. Instead, political strife continues to stifle growth.

VISA
For stays up to 21 days, visas are issued on arrival to nationals of counties with which Philippines has diplomatic relations (exceptions are China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, most communist and Middle Eastern countries).

HEALTH
Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from or via infected areas. Vaccination against Cholera, typhoid, and polio is recommended, as are precautions against malaria in rural areas. Rabies exists. Visitors are advised to bring supplies of prescribed medication. Drink only bottled or boiled water outside Manila.

CLIMATE
Sunny, hot and humid, but with distinct seasons. June-November are the humid rainy seasons when typhoons occur. Average daytime temperatures in coastal areas are 21-32°C.

WHAT TO WEAR
Lightweight, summer clothing is suitable, except in cooler highlands. For business a lightweight suit is appropriate.

MEASURES
Metric, but some local units still in use. Electricity: 220 volts, 60 cycles AC, except Baguio City which has 110 volt supplies.

MONEY
One peso (P1) equals 100 centavos. Note denominations 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 pesos. Keep receipts for reconverting leftover pesos. Major credit cards and US dollars are accepted in larger cities and resorts.

TIPPING
Tip 10-15% when service charge is not included. For porters, give 5-10 per piece of luggage, taxi drivers, 5-10% or loose change.

TAXES
A 13.5% is levied on goods and services.

BANKS
Banking hours are from 9am to 3pm on weekdays.

BUSINESS HOURS
Government office hours are from 8am-5pm Monday through Friday. Private offices are open 9am-5pm, with one hour lunch break. Many are open from 9am-noon on Saturdays.
