The Quad 4 engine is a high revving DOHC 2.3 liter inline 4 cylinder.Introduced in 1988 in Olds and Pontiacs.First thing most people wonder when they see a Quad4 for the first time is,where are the spark plugs and wires. The ignition is Distributorless Ignition System. No plug wires like you have been used to!There is a cover on the engine that says Quad4 on it.That cover is removable to access the plugs. When Changing plugs be sure to torque them to the proper specs!!Also the Quad4 will not run properly without decent backpressure so don't think of removing the cat, just get a high flow one!

This is a High Output Quad4

1986,TRW begins engineering the valvetrain for General Motors Quad4 engine.a 2.3 liter inline 4 cylinder that will overpower all other American FWD engines

Here is a pic of my old 88 Grand Am SE looks like now after another owner. Just happened to find it at a lot in Rochester MN, same town that I traded it in on my 89 SHO. I had my own Ram Air(you can see the hole in the bumper cover), 2.5" exhaust with high flow cat, lowered 3"(last owner decided to replace the shocks, struts, and all 4 springs, no more lowrider), and I had Dunlop D60s, it now has something else on it. It now has 150k on it also, runs and drives great, still seems to haul ass. I used to beat a lot of higher power cars with this LO Quad4, GTZs, Probe GTs, S10 SS, GTP(3.4), 350SS Chevy, and many others, it was the car that got my whole 4/6cyl woody started. Nothing like blowing away a Z28 with a Grand Am!

1988,The Quad4 is done.It is available in Pontiac Grand Ams and the Oldsmobile Calais.Horsepower is an understated 150hp.This is the year pontiac Grand Am SE Quad4 5-spd I had.I beleive it is better than the High Outputs because I beat a lot of HOs with my 88 with 130,000 miles.

Here is a 90 Grand Am SE,this pic found on another page

1990,The Beretta GTZ debuts with the new HO 180hp Quad4.It is only available with a 5-spd.The new HO is different than the older Quad4s by a new intake,a cast aluminum intake that looks similar to a factory exhaust manifold whereas the old one was a tubular header syle intake. The Cams are also different. The Exhaust manifold is also slightly different. It says High Output Quad4 16 valve on the engine cover. It is also available in the Pontiac Grand Ams,Olds Calais',Olds Cutlass Supreme INTLs,and Olds Acheivas. Motor Trend results are 7.3 0-60,and [email protected] for a 90 Grand Am SE Quad4

1991 Olds Calais 442 W-41.Motor Trend's test of a W-41 yielded 0-60 in 7 sec. 14.7/95 mph 1/4 mile times. The W-41 was a 190hp Quad4 made exclusivey for Oldsmobile and is to date the highest output Quad 4 produced. There were only 204 W-41 Calais' produced in 1991.The W-41 was put in 1992-1993 Achievas in the SCX package also.

1992,the W-41 Quad4 is only available in the Acheiva SCX for 92/93,hp is 190.A VTECH eater!!!These cars were limited editions so they are hard to find!An Acheiva SC is only a HO Quad4 so watch for the SCX!The Quad4 when mated to a 5-spd transmission can take a lot of V-8s to the cleaners!!

1995,the Pontiac Sunfire debuts and the Cavalier is revamped on the same chassis as the Sunfire. The Z-24 and GT come with a 2.3 Quad4 rated at 150hp.

1996,The Cavaleir Z-24 and the Sunfire GT come with a new 2.4 liter Twin Cam.The motor is similar to a Quad4 with .1 more Liter. The Twin Cam puts out a very modest 150hp.The engine is much quieter and smoother.Still needs more HP,3 concept Sunfires with a Superchargers have been seen!!Also there has been a Chevy Moab,a 190hp concept Twin Cam.
