Carroll Shelby, the man who created the Shelby Cobra, the man who helped to design the Dodge Viper, now introduces a new car. For 1997, the Shelby American company, with the help of Oldsmobile will introduce the Shelby Series 1. The new Series 1 bristles with breakthrough technology. The carbon fiber composites and super-light components of the chassis are intended to keep the car's target weight at an astonishingly low 2300 pounds. The body shell alone weighs less than a hundred pounds. In order to optimize handling, the semi- monocoque chassis has a computer-designed, fully independent suspension with an innovative rocker-arm configuration and inboard-mounted coil-over shock absorbers. The body shape not only draws inspiration from the Shelby Cobra, but it also benefits from the state-of-the-art aerodynamics that induce downforce and dissipate heat. Every aspect of the Shelby Series 1 has been directed toward a single overriding priority-- superior performance. Computer analysis predicts performance figures of 0-60 mph in under five seconds, and a calculated top speed of 170 mph. The Shelby Series 1 is powered by a specially modified Oldsmobile Aurora V-8, rear wheel drive engine. Shelby American claims that less than 500 of the Series 1 will be made. No base price has yet been set for this performance driven car.
