Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce

In 1996, Alfa Romeo with the help of Pininfarina designed a new Spider.
With the introduction of the Spider Veloce, don't expect any retro design
themes. With a few Alfa Romeo styling clues, the new Spider is attractive,
and yet distinct-- a vital feature of cars in this genre. The engines of
the Spider are now transversely mounted, with front-wheel drive. The base
engine, a 2.0 liter in-line four, resembles that of the mid-1950s, but has
been re-engineered with toothed-belt-driven twin overhead cams operating
with four valves per cylinder. The engine now makes 141 pound-feet of
torque at 4200 rpm and 155 hp at 6200 rpm. The twin-cam four-cylinder Spider
is fast but not spectacular, zero to sixty takes about 8 seconds, and there
is a top speed of 130 mph. The base price of the Spider Veloce ranges at
around $30,000.
