History of the Chevrolet Corvette



The first production Corvette rolled of a short assembly line in Flint, Michigan on June 30, 1953.
Three-hundred 1953 convertibles were hand-built - each white with a red interior and a black soft top.
Production shifted from Flint to St. Louis Missouri in December, 1953 where Corvettes were built
until 1981 when the sports car moved to a new home in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

The first viewing of the Corvette was in January 1953.
The first Corvette was built on June 30th, 1953 in Flint, Michigan.
The antennas in the '53 Corvettes were mesh screen fiberglassed into the inside of the trunk.
The '53 vettes had two interior hood releases, one for each hood latch.
There were only 300 Corvettes produced in 1953, all were roadsters.
All 300 were polo white on the outside and red on the inside.
The only engine available was a 150hp six cylinder engine with a powerglide automatic transmission.
The base price of the '53 Corvette was $3,498.00.

1954

Production of the Corvette was moved from Flint, Michigan to St. Louis in December of 1953.
There were 3,640 Corvettes made for the '54 model year although the St. Louis plant was designed to
produce 10,000 vettes per year.
During the '54 model year a camshaft change was made which increased horsepower from 150hp to
155hp in the Blue Flame Six engine.
Polo white was no longer the only exterior color the '54 vettes came in; three new colors were added to
the Corvette, Blue, Red, and Black.
Red was no longer the only option for interior color; now you could get a beige interior.
The '54 vette weighed in at 2,886lbs.
The base price of the '54 Corvette was $2,774.00.

1955

This was almost the last year of the Corvette, when only 700 Corvette Roadsters were made and sold.
One major change this year was the introduction of the 265 Cubic inch V-8 engine.
Exterior Colors for this model year were Polo White, Blue, Red, Copper, and Gold.
Interior Colors were Red, Dark Beige, Light Beige, and Yellow.
The '54 vette weighed in at roughly 2,886lbs depending on which engine was installed.
The six-cylinder had 155hp while the V-8 had 195hp.
The base price of the '55 Corvette was:
$2,774.00 with the six-cylinder engine.
$2,909.00 with the V-8 engine.

1956

This year Corvette production was up from only 700 the previous year to 3,467 Roadsters.
The body was all new with different head lights, tail lights, and a side "cove."
Exterior Colors for this model year could now come in two tone for the first time with the second color in the side cove.
The following colors were available:
- Artic Blue
- Aztec Black
- Cascade Green
- Onyx Black
- Polo White
- Venetian Red
Interior Colors were limited to only Red and Beige.
The '56 vette weighed in at roughly 2,875lbs.
The '56 vettes had 210hp to 240hp depending on the options chosen.
The base price of the '56 Corvette was $3,120.

1957

There were 6,339 Corvette Roadsters produced for the 1957 Model year.
this year was the first time ever that fuel injection and a 4-speed manual transmision was offered.
Seat belts were not installed. Mounting brackets were made standard so that dealers could install
them.
Exterior colors for the 1958 Corvette were:
- Artic Blue
- Aztec Copper
- Cascade Green
- Inca Silver
- Onyx Black
- Polo White
- Venetian Red
Interior Colors were Red, and Beige.
The '57 vette weighed in at roughly 2,849lbs.
The '57 vettes had 220hp to 283hp depending on the options chosen.
The base price of the '57 Corvette was $3,176.

1958

There were 9,168 Corvette Roadsters produced for the 1958 Model year.
The '58 Corvette had new body panels, rear rap around bumper, new instrument panel, and upholstery.
This was the first Corvette with four headlights and factory installed seat belts.
Polo White, for the first time, was no longer available, exterior colors for the 1958 Corvette were:
- Black
- Charcoal
- Panama Yellow
- Regal Turquoise
- Silver
- Silver Blue
- Signet Red
- Snowcrest White
Interior Colors were Charcoal, Red, and Beige.
The '58 vette weighed in at roughly 2,926lbs.
The '58 vettes had 230hp to 290hp depending on the options chosen.

1959

There were 9,670 Corvette Roadsters produced for the 1959 Model year.
This was the last year that Corvette sales were under 10,000.
Instruments were redesigned for better legibility in the '59 Vette.
Exterior colors for the 1959 Corvette were:
- Classic Cream
- Crown Sapphire
- Frost Blue
- Inca Silver
- Snowcrest White
- Tuxedo Black
- Roman Red
Interior Colors were Black, Red, Blue, Turquoise, and White.
The '59 vette weighed in at roughly 2,975lbs.

1960

There were 10,261 Corvette Roadsters produced for the 1960 Model year.
This was the last year the taillight were in the rounded rear fenders, and the last year the grill had
"heavy teeth."

- Ermine White

- Horizon Blue
- Roman Red
- Sateen Silver
- Tasco Turquoise
- Tuxedo Black
Interior Colors were Black, Red, Blue, and Turquoise.

1961

There were 10,939 Corvette Roadsters produced for the 1961 Model year.
This was the first year that their were four taillights, which would become a Corvette trademark.
This would be the last year for two-tone paint until the Big Block Stinger Hood came along in '67.

- Honduras Maroon
- Jewel Blue
- Roman Red
- Sateen Silver
- Tuxedo Black
Interior Colors were Black, Red, Blue, and Fawn.

1962

There were 14,531 Corvette Roadsters produced for the 1962 Model year.
This was the first year the 327ci engine was availible in the Corvette.
Two-tone paint was no longer an option on the 1962 Corvette.
The dual four barrel carb was no longer available in the '62 Vette.
Exterior colors for the 1962 Corvette were:
- Almond Beige
- Ermine White
- Fawn Beige
- Honduras Maroon
- Sateen Silver
- Roman Red
- Sateen Silver
- Tuxedo Black
Interior Colors were Black, Red, and Fawn.

1963

There were 10,919 Corvette Roadsters, and 10,594 Coupes produced for the 1963 Model year.
This was the first year that all the Corvette's produced were not Roadsters.
The Corvette had a completely new look this year with the stingray body style.
This was the only year with a split rear window.
Exterior colors for the 1963 Corvette were:
- Daytona Blue
- Ermine White
- Saddle Tan
- Sebring Silver
- Silver Blue
- Tuxedo Black
- Riverside Red
Interior Colors were Black, Red, Dark Blue,and Saddle.
The '63 vette weighed in at roughly 3,015lbs.
The '63 vettes had 250hp to 360hp depending on the options chosen.
The base price of the '63 Corvette was $4,257 for the Coupe and $4,037 for the Roadster.

1964

There were 13,925 Corvette Roadsters, and 8,304 Coupes produced for the 1964 Model year.
The rear window was no longer "split" to improve visibility.
Exterior colors for the 1964 Corvette were:
- Daytona Blue
- Ermine White
- Riverside Red
- Saddle Tan
- Satin Silver
- Silver Blue
- Tuxedo Black
Interior Colors were Black, Red, Silver, White, Blue, and Saddle.
The '64 vette weighed in at roughly 3,125lbs.
The '64 vettes had 250hp to 375hp depending on the options chosen.
The base price of the '64 Corvette was $4,252 for the Coupe and $4,037 for the Roadster.

1965

There were 15,376 Corvette Roadsters, and 8,186 Coupes produced for the 1965 Model year.
This was the first year of the Big Block with the appearance of the 396ci.
Four wheel disc brakes became standard.
Exterior colors for the 1965 Corvette were:
- Ermine White
- Glen Green
- Goldwood Yellow
- Milano Maroon
- Nassau Blue
- Rally Red
- Silver Pearl
- Tuxedo Black
Interior Colors were Black, Red, Green, Maroon, Silver, White, Blue, and Saddle.
The '65 vette weighed in at roughly 3,135lbs.
The '65 vettes had 250hp to 425hp depending on the options chosen.
The base price of the '65 Corvette was $4,321 for the Coupe and $4,106 for the Roadster.

1966

There were 17,762 Corvette Roadsters, and 9,958 Coupes produced for the 1966 Model year.
The big block was increased from a 396ci engine to the 427ci.
This was the last year for "knock-off wheels."
Backup lights became standard for the 1966 model year.
Exterior colors for the 1966 Corvette were:
- Ermine White
- Laguna Blue
- Milano Maroon
- Mosport Green
- Nassau Blue
- Rally Red
- Silver Pearl
- Sunfire Yellow
- Trophy Blue
- Tuxedo Black
Interior Colors were Black, Red, Green, Blue, Silver, White + Blue, Bright Blue, and Saddle.
The '66 vette weighed in at roughly 3,140lbs.
The '66 vettes had 300hp to 425hp depending on the options chosen.
The base price of the '66 Corvette was $4,295 for the Coupe and $4,084 for the Roadster.

1967

There were 14,436 Corvette Roadsters, and 8,504 Coupes produced for the 1967 Model year.
This was the last year of the current body style that started in 1963.
This was the last year that Sting Ray was written as two words.
Four-way flashers, turn signals, and dual master cylinders became standard for the 1967 model year.
Exterior colors for the 1967 Corvette were:
- Elkhart Blue
- Ermine White
- Goldwood Green
- Lynndale Blue
- Marina Blue
- Marlboro Maroon
- Rally Red
- Silver Pearl
- Sunfire Yellow
- Tuxedo Black

The '67 vette weighed in at roughly 3,155lbs.
The '67 vettes had 300hp to 435hp depending on the options chosen.
The base price of the '67 Corvette was $4,388 for the Coupe and $4,240 for the Roadster.

1968

There were 18,630 Corvette Roadsters, and 9,936 Coupes produced for the 1968 Model year. Both the Corvette Exterior and Interior were redesigned for the '68 production year The powerglide 2 speed automatic transmission was now replaced with the 3 speed turbo hydra-matic The front headlights no longer rotated, they now poped up from the body of the car. The battery was moved from the engine compartment to behind the drivers seat, where it would stay until the 1994 Model year. Exterior colors for the 1968 Corvette were: - British Green - Cordovan Maroon - Corvette Bronze - International blue - LeMans Blue - Polar White - Rally Red - Safari Yellow - Silverstone Silver - Tuxedo Black Interior Colors were Black, Red, Gun Metal, Medium Blue, dark Blue, Dark Orange and Tabacco. The '68 vette weighed in at roughly 3,210lbs. The '68 vettes had 300hp to 435hp depending on the options chosen. The base price of the '68 Corvette was $4,663 for the Coupe and $4,320 for the Roadster.
