GPR has come to the rescue of poor 914 stopping power. They use ATE early 3-series BMW calipers that are ready to bolt on to the 914. There are two kits, one for 914's up to 1972, and one for later models. The earlier models have one caliper offset. The calipers are brand new from ATE, the supplier that manufactured the original 914 calipers. These newer calipers are 48mm in diameter which is 30% larger than the stock 42mm calipers. Also the GPR kit contains pads that are 40% larger than stock pads for longer pad life. Note from author James Sly: Braking improvement on a caliper comes from increased clamping force from a larger piston, not from larger pads. With this kit, the rotors don't have to be replaced, and the new calipers are a direct bolt on replacement. The kit includes new calipers, clips and retainers, and new Deluxe pads. Prices for the kits as shown in the May 1997 issue of European Car are $385 for the early 914 kit (BBK914E; 914's from 1970 to 1972) and $439 for the late models (BBK914L; 1972 and up) The list prices for the original equipment are $429 and $499 respectively, so not only is it wiser to go with better braking power, but also cheaper. One other recommendation they give is to upgrade the stock 17mm master cylinder to a 911 19mm one (part number 911.355.012.02).
