Membership Information

Motorcar Operators West (MOW) was formed in 1992 to promote the restoration and safe, legal operation of railroad motorcars (also known as "speeders"). We are a democratically run, non-profit organization with membership open to anyone interested in railroad maintenance-of-way equipment. MOW members enjoy learning about, restoring, operating, and maintaining such disappearing railroad equipment.

MOW has developed into a very well organized, highly safety-oriented organization, sponsoring motorcar excursions throughout the Western United States and Canada.

Members who want to operate a motorcar must pass a written rulebook exam and be mentored by an experienced operator before receiving their operating license. To operate a motorcar in a MOW event, each operator is required to participate in the insurance program provided by NARCOA (North American Railcar Operators' Association). Information about this insurance program is included in MOW's New Member's Packet, which is sent to you when you join. Information about this insurance program may also be obtained at the web site of NARCOA (follow this link).

Membership is $24.00 a year and includes the following:

The opportunity to operate your own motorcar on railroads throughout the United States and Canada.

Six issues of the LINEUP, a bi-monthly newsletter filled with tips, excursion information, articles, etc.

A copy of MOW's current Membership Roster.

A copy of MOW's Operating Book of Rules.

A copy of MOW's Operations and Reference Handbook.

All voting privileges and rights as established by the organization's by-laws.

Follow this link for a printable MOW Membership Application.

For more information, please write: MOW, 8672 Fairmont Way, Fair Oaks, CA 95628.

Insurance

Insurance makes private operation of railroad motorcars possible. Thus, insurance is required for each and every member of MOW who wishes to operate a railroad motorcar on any MOW excursion. Insurance for MOW members is obtained through NARCOA (North American Railcar Operators' Association). Please visit NARCOA's web site for more detailed information about insurance, or contact Doug Stivers - NARCOA Western Region Coordinator.

Motorcar Operators West - Operating Book of Rules

MOW has in existence an Operating Book of Rules which governs the state-of-being and operation of each and every motorcar on any MOW excursion, as well as the behavior and conduct of every MOW member while on such an excursion. Safety is the bedrock foundation of motorcar enjoyment, and therefore is of number one priority during any MOW event! Every MOW New Member Packet will include a copy of the Operating Book of Rules for MOW, and any member wishing to operate a motorcar during a MOW excursion must pass a written rulebook exam before such an operation occurs.

A copy of the MOW Operating Book of Rules may be viewed online on the RULEBOOK page of the official MOW web site.
