A coil of wire called a solenoid can make a much stronger magnetic field than a single piece of wire. It acts as a bar magnet with North and South poles.

The types of pole can be determined by looking at the solenoid from one end. If the direction of current flow is clock-wise then it is South pole. Now move to the other end and look. If the direction of current flow is anti clock-wise then it is North pole.

Another way is by holding the solenoid with your right hand and your fingers showing the direction of current. Your thumb is pointing at North pole.
