A coil of wire called a solenoid can make a much stronger magnetic field than a single piece of wire. It acts as a bar magnet with North and South poles. The types of pole can be determined by looking at the solenoid from one end. If the direction of current flow is clock-wise then it is South pole. Now move to the other end and look. If the direction of current flow is anti clock-wise then it is North pole. |
Another way is by holding the solenoid with your right hand and your fingers showing the direction of current. Your thumb is pointing at North pole. |
