| My Background | ||||||
| I have had the priviledge of giving birth to two children so far. My first child was a natural birth in a hospital. It was an amazing and empowering experience. After the birth of my first child I became interested in birth. In April of 2004 I attended a three-day birth doula training course through D.O.N.A. My second child was born that summer. I planned for him to be born at a birth center. Instead, I was transferred and he was born in a hospital. I received an epidural after a long, stalled labor. I learned a lesson in the unpredictable nature of birth. In October of 2004 I attended a three day postpartum doula training course through D.O.N.A. I have also attended three childbirth class series, two breastfeeding class series, and completed numerous reading assignments on books relating to pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and postpartum care. I have breastfed both of my children. I have worked as a Patient Care Technician in the postpartum unit of a local hospital. I am CPR certified for infants, children, and adults. To stay current I attend local doula and midwife conferences and study any new research that is released regarding the child-bearing family. I have long felt the calling to be a midwife. In pursuit of that dream I will begin my training to become a registered nurse in the Fall of 2005. During the school year I will only be able to accept a limited number of clients. My personal birth philosophy is that birth is a miraculous, natural process and needs no intervention under most circumstances. However, I am grateful for the study of medicine and the advanced technologies that are available for the rare occasion when birth does not proceed as it should. I believe women should have confidence in their body's ability to give birth. I also feel strongly that women should take responsibilty for their health and make informed choices. As a doula I hope to assist women achieve the birth experience they desire. |
