All states have a history and something they are proud of and West Virginia is no different. We have a deep history in coal mining and suppling this country with energy and heat. But as anything it has it's downfalls and fatalities.
This picture is of an aulger. A large disk with small teeth-like blades that can dig the coal out of small places. And as you can tell some coal mines wasn't even high enough to walk up right
The roofs of a coal mine are unstable and would have to be bolted into place to keep from caving in on the miners
The coal companies would build small camps for their miners and their families to live in. Small camps still dot the country side in rural Wv still.
