The sun is setting over Svalbard. The sunlight is reflecting off of the water between pancakes of ice. The round pancakes, if you look closely, are formed from smaller pancakes. This results from the action of the waves on "frazil" ice (small needles and disks of ice formed in turbulent, supercooled water- notorious for clogging intakes!). A better picture of pancake ice can be found elsewhere on this site!
