Our History
Ten years ago 6 people decided to walk together on a Saturday morning.
It was actually the Paul Lenio 10K Run and fun walk. The trekkers were
Linda and Ernie Reynolds, Betsy Hermes, Debbie Martinez and Marilyn and
Bob Sadorf. The five agreed to walk each Saturday. Originally each
member decided on a route and led the group.
Father William Parenteau, the pastor of Sacred Heart Church in
Tombstone joined the group. Once each month he led a hike in
Tombstone. Soon the group grew to 12 and then 20 people. One sunny
Saturday morning Father Bill, as we called him, led the group on a hike in
Walnut Gulch. He told us it was to be about 4 miles. Father Bill
couldn't find the way out of the gulch and finally we had to bushwhack
our way out. At one point Betsy called out. "Moses! Where are you taking
us?" From that day on he became affectionally known to us as "Father
Moses." As we reached the Longhorn Restaurant for our breakfast, Father
whispered to Bob that we had actually walked 9.1 miles. The group began
to be known as "Moses Trekkers". Father Moses left us and went to his
heavenly reward on July 24, 2003. He will always be remembered for his
hearty laugh and his wild sense of humor.
In the early days, Bob called each trekker on the phone to give the hike
information. Today, all but 3 of the 58 members can be notified by
E-mail. And now we have our website to keep us informed. Leaders of the group include Trekker Bob Sadorf, Trekker Rita
Thompson and Trekker Jerry Goebel. The group walks every Saturday and we
never miss breakfast after the hike. A number of local eateries look
forward to our weekly gatherings.
