| Synopsis: |
Charles Nicholl
was drawn to Thailand by the words of a Buddhist monk he saw on TV one
night, but his journey to the forest temple proves longer and more complex
than he expected. It takes him through the backstreets of Bangkok, along
the banks of the Mekong river, up into the "mongrel country" of
the Golden Triangle, and across the border into rebel-held Burma. The
story of a journey becomes many stories: of his travelling companions
Katai and Harry; of Kachin jade and Shan opium; of borderlines you cannot
cross and destinations you never reach. |
