It
was a strange proposal! When the handsome Ukrainian farmhand, Alexander
Bresnyachuk, suggests marriage to Sophie Ware, a young, modern
schoolteacher living on a run-down farm in Buffalo Jump, she is outraged.
For Alexander admits he is not in love with her - he would simply like to
own her farm. But when Sophie takes a hard look around and realises how
few available men there are in her rural western neighbourhood, she
accepts. And sets out to make Alexander fall in love with her before the
wedding. But it's no easy job to seduce an old-fashioned man who believes
in sex after marriage, as Sophie discovers. Nor is it easy for her to
accept the fact that in the past Alexander has had an Indian girlfriend
who bore him a child - or that love is nothing like Sophie thought it
would be. |
