       The awakening of academics!

How many Assyrians had an idea that a female professor at Harvard, one of the best neurosurgeons in the US, and Thea Halo who’s written the book “Not even my name” about the massacres of our people, all three are Assyrians?

I had the pleasure to attend “The World Assyrian Conference” held at Hotel Russia in Moscow 10-11th of May 2002. The responsible team organizing this conference was the people behind the known bulletin of “Meltha”, which is published in English, and the Moscow Assyrian Association “Khayadta”.

The purpose with this conference was to gather intellectuals among our people to discuss issues and perspectives of Assyrians today. The Organizing Committee, with chairman Prof. Sargis Osipov, had invited 20 Assyrian professors, doctors and writers from all over the world to participate at this conference. All the lecturers had about 20 minutes to deliver their opinions. For two days with four sessions and five lecturers at each session, the audience where listening to languages in Russian and English, translated synchronically, and Syriac. All the abstracts are available and the full versions are to be published in the next bulletin of Meltha.

The first day began with the opening of the first session by Prof. Mikhail Sado from St. Petersburg, whom been held in prison for 13 years because of thoughts and acts not appropriate in former Soviet Union. He spoke about the repression against Assyrians in the USSR during 1920-53.

As I sat there and listened to the lecturers with their abstracts in my hand, I felt that this is something important even for other organizations such as the Assyrian Youth Federation (AUF). A gathering of intellectuals among the world to discuss just the issues I believe is necessary for the youth and their future:

1. How to increase the knowledge and importance of higher studies among youngsters
2. Creation of a global forum or institution, for and by academics all around the world
3. Frequently gather academics and youth world wide for an international conference
4. Take advantage of our graduated academics to support students, which is in need of good role models

Among the lecturers some had more suitable issues regarding Saais interests than others, for example, Prof. Eden Naby-Frye (Harvard, USA) talked about “Prospects for Development: Reaching out of our Ghetto”, Dr. Norman Solhkhah (Chicago, USA) talked about; “5000 years of writing” and the importance with further studies and the development of our language. Dr. Gabriele Yonan (Berlin, Germany), known for here research talked about “Genocide and Identity”. Most of the lecturers had very important and interesting ideas. The fact that they all emphasized the points mentioned above, I can say that they all agreed about the essential point of view organizations such as AUF give youngsters, which in turn is important for AUF it self.

Except the already mentioned lecturers, some participants is named below:

Prof. Sargis Osipov, M.D. Gabriel Oussi, Sodertalie, Dr. Daniel Wolk, Chicago, Moscow, Dr. Khosaba P. Jasim, Chicago, Prof. Arianne Ishaya, Cupertino, USA, Rabi Walter Veniaminov, Novorossiysk, Russia, Rabi Vasili Shoumanov, Chicago, Dr. Anzor Ivanov, Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, Rabi Roland Bidjamov, Moscow, Prof. Ronald Thomas-Zadeh, Tehran; “A global strategy for Assyrians”
Dr. Irina Sargadov-Gasparyan, Erevan, Armenia, Dr. Aprim Shapera, London, Rabi Arsen Savva, Kazan, Russia, Dr. Tamaz Ivanov, Tbilisi, Georgia, Igor Bar-Sliva, Moscow, Nuzgar Khoshabaev-Tziklauri, Moscow, Edward Badalov, Moscow

As every other conference’s there was no exception made here. After the session on Friday evening the Organizing Committee had arranged tickets to nothing less than Tjajkovski’s magnificent “The Swan Lake” at the fabulously wonderful Bolshoi theatre, a Mecca for culturally interested people. And on Saturday evening they had arranged a Banquet on a boat with buffet and live performance. I am hopeful that this will be a continuous activity.

An unforgettable journey – with an important mission
