David Weller's Resume

~ Introduction ~

My primary job since 1999 has been caregiver to my two daughters. I'm currently back in school studying Web Development to make myself marketable in the work force after an extended absence. Before leaving work to take care of children, I wrote state-wide publications covering California state government for residential care facility administrators. In addition I've done contract technical writing and newspaper reporting.

~ Work Experience ~

California Update Publications: I wrote and edited four state-wide newsletters for the California residential care community. California Update tracked state legislation, regulations, court decisions and news affecting residential care administrators and social service professionals. Human Services Money Source provided information on grants and contracts available to social service organizations. Residential Care Today was a quarterly that included longer articles and news digests. Year in Review summarized all the social service legislation covered during the year.

I was involved in many parts of the publishing process, including research, writing, editing, training, layout, paste-up, and managing printing contracts. For six months, I managed advertising accounts for Residential Care Today. For four months I edited the publications while training a new publisher and a new writer.

Sources: I used a wide variety of sources to research the publications. For California Update I tracked all relevant proposed bills through the legislative process. I also kept track of prosposed departmental regulations affecting the residential care industry. For relevant California Court of Appeals cases I used the daily appellate reviews published in the Daily Recorder, a trade publication for attorneys. Maintaining a press box in Sacramento allowed me to keep track of governmental press releases. Scanning the headlines of seven or eight daily newspapers helped me keep track of news from around the state.

For Human Services Money Source I used the Federal Register to keep track of federal grants and a variety of mailing lists for state grants. For private grants I researched foundations using the internet and library sources.

For Residential Care Today I used Lexis/Nexis searches to research news digests. For the longer articles I used the knowledge I gained doing research for the other publications to come up with ideas, and conducted telephone interviews to do the research.

Newspaper Reporting: From 1993 through 1995 I wrote newspaper articles for The News-Ledger a West Seattle weekly newspaper. My duties included covering education issues, crime, and local government.

For a short time during this period, I also wrote articles for the Lake County Record-Bee.

Technical Writing: During 2005 and 2006 I wrote technical training manuals for a cement manufacturing plant in Seattle.
