Coyote

Coyote

The Coyote is the new 8x8 Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle for the Canadian Forces. It is based on the LAV-25, but includes a sophisticated package of surveillance devices. It is armed with a 25mm chaingun, a 7.62mm C-6 MG co-axial, a C-6 on the turret roof, and smoke dischargers. It has a crew of four (crew commander, gunner, driver, operator). Unlike the rest of the LAV family, it is not amphibious. The surveillance suite comes in two variants: a tripod mounted version and a version mounted on a 10m mast. Canada has purchased 152 Coyotes and the first deliveries were received in 1996.

This is the Coyote with the tripod mounted surveillance suite. The surv suite includes a MSTAR radar capable of detecting heavy veh out to 20+ km, a Thermal Imager, a day/night camera and a Laser Range Finder. The tripods are capable of being deployed up to 200m away from the veh. The information from the sensors can be transmitted back to the surv operators console in the back of the veh as well as the controls for the sensors by way of the large wire spool shown in this image.
