Air Defence Anti-tank System (ADATS)
The ADATS (Air Defense Anti-Tank System) is a low level defense unit use to target a wide range of threats. The ADATS was designed to provide air defense for mobile troops and installations. The ADATS can operate during day or night and in any type of weather. It has the ability to destroy air targets as well as ground targets. This makes the ADATS a very versatile weapon.
The ADATS has a length of 5.8m, width of 2.9m, Height of 3.8m and weighs 15.4t. The top speed of the ADATS is 60km/h and has a range of 500km. The ADATS is armed with 8 ready-to-fire missiles, each 2.8m long. The missiles can reach the speeds of MACH 3 or higher and can travel 10km. The Sensors the ADATS uses are search radar and electro-optical device containing a TV and Forward Looking Infrared. The radar range is 25km. The Engine the ADATS uses is a 5.2Heighte, V-6 Detroit Diesel.
The Crew of the ADATS consists of three personnel, a Driver, Commander/Radio Operator and a electro-optical Operator.
The ADATS first entered service in 1989. 36 ADATS were produced as part of the Low Level Air Defense Project which consisted of other weapons and costed $109 billion. Currently ADATS are deployed with the 4th Air De fence Regiment with batteries located in Moncton and Gagetown New Brunswick, and the Royal Canadian Artillery School in Gagetown.
