| Morris Minor LCV Original Details | ||||||||
| Details and specifications of most Morris Minors are available in a variety of books in particular Original Morris Minor by Ray Newell. But to find anything much specific to New Zealand LCVs is avoiding me. I have accumulated general LCV info here with reference to NZ particulars. If you can add to it please e-mail me. ([email protected]). Mechanics: The rear springs had 7 leaves for the Series IIs but the number was later increased to 8 leaves for the 6cwt versions and 7 thicker leaves for the 8cwt versions. 6cwt and 8cwt versions had stronger steering leavers than earlier models and cars. Body: LCVs have full length box chassis as opposed to the cars which were built in unit construction. The cab is bolted to the chassis and is the same for both van and ute. The van-back and wellside are bolted to the cab and chassis. (some were supplied only as a cab and chassis) The lower section of the van-back is the same panelling as the wellside. LCVs do not have the body-stripe molding continued onto the bonnet. It seems NZ and English vans did not have the rear lower triangle on the inside of the rear doors filled but had holes for attachment screws but no plate (as opposed to Australian vehicles). LCVs had rear slimline rubber bumperettes until longer tail/indicator lights were added when the bumperettes were also lengthened. Very last NZ LCVs did not have any bumperettes. Colours: See colour page for colour names. Many LCVs were supplied in primer and painted in company colours. NZ LCVs had their bumber blades painted the same colour as the body work. NZ LCVs had their door window surrounds painted the same colour as the body work. Chrome work: LCVs have series MM insignia and bonnet flash up to about 72 (NZ) but the very last vehicles did not have the bonnet flash. No 'Morris Minor' or 'Morris 1000' badging on bonnet. The bumper blade is shorter than the cars (and painted rather than chromed). No overriders. Wheels: 8cwt LCVs had wider rims than cars etc. 4 1/2" Painted silver on later models. (Use Plasticoat silver Wheel Paint for a close to original match) Originally ran crossplys but will run 175/65/14 radials. Spare attaches to cab-back on ute or in front of the left hand wheel arch in vans. Inside: Key on steering column in very last models (72 on in NZ) Rubber mats were used rather than carpets. (These caused rust) Side panels on doors were not vinyl covered. Seats, side panels and parcel trays did not always match (colourwise) on the very last NZ LCVs, whatever they had went in. Lighting: Front lights same as cars. Rear only had small round tail lights. But when amber indicators were added to the front the rear also gained amber indicators and both were shaped more like beehives. (longer) Particular problems relating to LCVs: Wellsides rust where cab back meets deck floor. The cab-back, floor, and side panels will rust if left moist. Vans rust along gutting around the roof, particularly near the rear. The whole roof will lift off given time. |
