| The charger Sportsman was introduced during the VJ model run. There are approx 400 odd VJ sportsman produced, All Sportsman were based on the curent base VJ XL model, but had some 770 options, namely the W36 Styled road wheels, 3 spoke steering wheel, and the 770 style dash with a black bezell and Tacho all sportmand came with a bright red carpet. All sportsman were fitted with the 265 hemi, it was available only with a 3speed auto or 4 speed manual, both were floor mounted only. Exterior there is no mistaking a sportsman, it was based on Vintaeg red, but had white accents on the roof and wheel arches and between the tail lights. Inside was trim was specially made for this limited run , a tartan type cloth checkered material called Wimbledon Plaid, red carpet was also installed on the floor and bottom of the doors. The top of the door trims has also the special Sportsman script similar to the VH's 770 or R/T script. Mechanical it was a standard 265 in a XL VH body, however they all recieved the front swap bar that was standard on the 770's.All up it was only lacking the 770's woodgrain dash, remote controll round exterior mirror and the sports flip filler fuel cap. I will research and get the price, but as usuall with these things they were a bargain compared to optioning up a base car. The sportsman joins the white knights and the drifter chargers as once only special to boost sales, while they are a special runn or a marketing ploy to boost failing sales they are unique and diferent to the daily XL or 770 that was available at any time.After the RT's and E55's, they rank as colelctable along with pilice vehicles and the other liimited run chargers If you have one - Keep It , you wont really find another. |
