| Morris 1100 Specification Produced: Cowley (and some cars at Longbridge). 1962-67,703,000 saloons, plus combined total of 41, 000 Austin/Morris estates of all types built 1962- 74. General layout: Pressed-steel unit- construction body- chassis structure, in 4 seater, 2 door and 4 door saloon styles. Front and transversely-mounted engine driving front wheels. Engine and transmission: BMC A-Series engine, 4 cylinder, ohv, in-line. 1, 098cc, 64.58 X 83.72mm, 48bhp at 5,100rpm; 60lb ft at 2,500rpm. 4-speed gearbox, 4 forward gears; centre-floor gear- change; spur-gear final drive. Chassis: Independent front suspension, Hydrolastic units and wishbones. Rack-and-pinion steering. Independent rear suspension by Hydrolastic units, trailing arms and anti-roll bar. Interconnection between front and rear suspensions. Front disc and rear drum brakes. 5.50- 12in tyres. Dimensions: Wheelbase 7ft 9.5in; rear track 4ft 2.9in; length 12ft 2.7in; width 5ft 0.4in; height 4ft 4.7in. Unladen weight (approx) 1,800lb. Typical performance: Maximum speed 78mph; 0-60mph 22.2sec; standing 1/4-mile 22.7 sec; overall fuel consumption 33mph. Distinguishing features from previous models: Entirely new type of Morris model with Pininfarina styling. Derivatives: Austin 1100 was the same car, with different badges and details. MG 1100, Riley Kestrel and Wolsley 1100 models were all slightly modified versions, too. Estate Traveller for 1966 and 1967. MK II (see seperate entry) was the same car with minor changes. Fate: Discontinued in 1967 and replaced by MK II models. |
