| al gore is an expert on global warming, and he invented the internet. . . i think becoming a teacher is a good career choice for me. especially given my distaste for ignorance. it seems like over the past few years people in general have become more ignorant and even worse, happy to argue about topics which they know little or nothing about. as a result it seems as though i spend a large portion of time arguing or debating with people who are 90 percent of the time just plain wrong. i will admit that on occasion i am wrong, but i am always willing to admit it. ignorant people are not, they will argue a point with no factual basis, citing an article they once read without being able to give an author or source. they will quote a multitude of people from oprah and rosie to george bush and al gore. and usually they will even get that wrong, using their false interpretations of what was said to support their faulty ideas. your average person is willing to argue on topics from immigration to global warming. everyone now days is an expert in every field. the sad thing is that when you point out the inaccuracy in their arguments they close their ears and are unwilling to hear the facts. when i came across a topic i know little about i will argue based upon my limited knowledge on the subject, but the difference between me and most people is if someone tells me i am wrong, i will research the topic so that in future debates i will not be as uneducated or unprepared. i am willing to admit that i was wrong instead of going on thinking that what i know is right. somewhere along the line it has become socially acceptable to be ignorant. to know the ideas and none of the facts and to form opinions based on hearsay and what a celebrity might have been quoted as saying on a given topic. children need to be taught that it is not ok to be ignorant. that a person must research ideas before forming a potentially bias opinion on a topic. the mindset of the human race as a whole is a poor one, that should be discouraged. it allows frauds like al gore and john edwards to perpetuate fallacies and myths for their own personal gains. as i teacher i know i would reach an extremely small percentage of children, but it would be worth it if i could teach even a fraction of them that ignorance is not acceptable. |
