Paris, Texas is “The Best Small Town in Texas” and it has “The Second Largest Eiffel Tower in the Second Largest Paris in the World.”  It is situated in East Texas, specifically Northeast Texas, at the western edge of the Piney Woods, located at the southern edge of the Sherwood Forrest, which of course is home to Robin Hood and his Merry Men (but they live in the northwestern part).  Being the second largest Paris in the world, the city felt it would be fun to emulate life in the first largest Paris in the world.  Having an official city vote on July 14th, the city adpoted many aspects of life in “the real Paris.”  This includes everything from an Eiffel Tower of their own, celebrating Bastille Day(July 14th) and even the art of not bathing.  One resident known only as “Pokey Phil” has been known to chalk famous Monet paintings on random sidewalks throughout the city.  The city’s first Eiffel Tower was made of wood and was actually blown down by high winds.  The second Eiffel Tower was made of steel and does in fact have a gigantic red cowboy hat at it’s peak.  It is said that this was done as a “nod to the gods” that the second tower doesn’t blow down as well.

Speaking of Gods the city also boasts a 12-foot Jesus in cowboy boots.  Rumor has it students at The Texas Institute of Jewelry Technology at Paris Junior College play with his spurs during finals week in the hopes of getting better grades.  “Jesus Eastwood” was also the inspiration for Nancy Sinatra’s classic hit “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’.”

Paris is the second-largest city in Texas without a four-lane divided highway connecting to an Interstate highway within the state.  Yes you read that right, probably a few times too.  We don’t know what it means either.  Paris is also accessable through Cox Field, a three runway commercial airport located in the city.  Cox Field is named after famous Paris resident Harry Cox.  The air field stayed in the family and is currently run by his great-grandson, Hugh G. Cox, and his Japanese wife, Sukmi Cox.

Famous people from Paris include: A.M. Aiken Jr., Clay Aiken’s grandfather, Jack Russell, the “famous” Major League Baseball relief pitcher, not the dog guy, and of course the greatest white rapper of all time, Robert VanWrinkle, also known as Vanilla Ice.  Ice was not born here but did go to school in Paris and it was here that he first rapped on stage at a talent show and came up with the name Vanilla Ice.  The name comes not from being a cool white guy but rather because he was a social outcast and did not follow much of the city.  Sara Lee bakery’s were located in Paris and most of the town was enamered by their then famous “warm chocolate cake”, this prompted Robert to “do the opposite” and come up with the name Vanilla Ice as his stage name for that now legendary talent show.   At school he was also quite the math phenom, often jumping on his desk and claiming, “if there was a problem yo, I’ll solve it!”
