Walla Walla, Washington is a city you may have heard of, after all it is mentioned as a funny city name in several cartoons. But what you may not know is that Walla Walla is fantastically interesting city. The city so nice they named it twice Back in the day many adventurous people were moving west and in the 1830’s many settled in Walla Walla. Two of its more famous residents back then were Narcissa and Marcus Whitman. Narcissa was the first white women to settle west of the Rocky Mountains. They established the Whitman Mission in an unsuccessful attempt to convert the local Walla Walla tribe. The natives killed both shortly thereafter. Years after this event the Whitman College was founded in Walla Walla in their honor. Students at Whitman College are called “Whitties.” For those of you reading this thinking that’s one of our jokes, sadly even we wouldn’t have gone there, that’s true. This is especially fitting since the campus is primarily white. This however caused some controversy during the current academic year when two students arrived at an off-campus party in blackface. Yeah not so funny now is it? The schools official mascot is “The Missionary” and the most popular cheer at their sporting evens is “Missionaries, Missionaries, we’re on top.” Whitman College is also the home to Dr. Richard Garfield who single-handedly invented the trading card game Magic: The Gathering. The school hosts tournaments on a regular basis and has the Doctor’s original deck on display year round including his coveted hand-drawn Black Lotus card. Many Whitties believe that visiting the Black Lotus on the day of a final can, much like the game increase your manna by a power of 3, which apparently causes you to do better, or something.
Walla Walla is also known for its vast wine and produce, most notably the Walla Walla Sweet Onion, which contrary to its name is actually a sweet onion grown in Walla Walla. It is a local delicacy eaten in many different forms and recipes. Some residents eat the onions similar to an apple to “ward off the natives.” The wine industry in Walla Walla is flourishing at a pace the world cannot keep up with. The city is said to be the next Napa Valley. The real Napa gets approximately 5 million visitors each year making it the 2nd most visiting place in the U.S. after Disneyland. Walla Walla however gets approximately 2,000 visitors each year making it the 5 millionth most popular place to visit each year.
Walla Walla Penitentiary houses 2000 of Washington State’s finest inmates. These inmates are in prison for all sorts of crimes including but not limited to theft, murder, drug trafficking, loitering, sexual abuse, and even mopery (which as we all know is exposing yourself to a blind person). Think you know an inmate? Check out their prison roster, I checked the person closest to my name and she gets out in 12 days, that’s a little freaky. Please don’t kill me Amber.
Other famous residents of Walla Walla include, Injury-prone, forever-child quarterback Drew Bledsoe, “Face” from the A-Team (Dirk Benidict), Real World Psychopath Tonya Cooley, the guy that played Commander Trip on Star Trek, and the Mayor of Quahog, R.I. Adam West.
