XIOtech, a new participant in the RAID market, a two-year-old company led by
former executives of Clariion, Tricord Systems and other storage vendors, is shipping the Magnitude disk array, boasting processing speeds in excess of 50,000 I/Os per second, making it
10 times faster than any enterprise-class RAID system on the market
,
according to Philip Soran, XIOtech president.
Soran attributes Magnitude's speed to proprietary Remarkably Efficient Device I/O (REDI) data software. Using a design that sequentializes random data, the Magnitude array employs queue management, virtual disk intelligence and optimization software.
"Our software eliminates the mechanical limitations of the disk drives." The Magnitude array can support eight heterogeneous servers and one terabyte of data. The servers are attached via a Fibre Channel point-to-point topology to attain throughput of up to 100 megabytes per second.
Up to 64 drives can be installed and can accommodate standard Ultra, Wide and low-voltage differential SCSI disk drives.
XIOtech is offering three Magnitude models. The XP, with 137 gigabytes of capacity and support for two servers, is priced at $87,500.
The XC, which supplies four server connections and a 288-gigabyte capacity, is priced at $112,500. A base unit with the REDI data processor is priced at $55,000.
