Apprentices
Apprentices are aged from 12 turns upward. The apprentice remains an apprentice until he has accomplished the fundamentals of the profession - this alone usually takes several turns - and demonstrates a desire and aptitude for further learning, as well as completing the prescribed lessons. Once the basics are learned, the apprentice may specialize if a journeyman or master is willing to sponsor them. An apprentice only becomes a journeyman at the vote of five of the Masters, with the right of veto by Masterharper Chase.

Journeymen
A journeyman is generally at least 18 turns of age. Once journeyman status is reached, journeying may begin, although it is usually expected that a journeyman remain at the Hall for a turn or so. In times of need and in cases of obvious talent, Masterharper Chase may actively encourage early journeying. A journeyman may begin studying for mastery once they complete the prescribed journeyman curriculum, but must be assigned to the Master of the specialty he or she wishes to become a master in for at least a turn of that study period before mastery will even be considered. Mastery (general or specific) is only achieved by unanimous vote of the Departmental Heads and the Masterharper.

Masters and masters
There are specific masters allocated to positions in the Harper Hall, a bit like Deans or Heads of Department, known as Masters. That is not to say that Cortin is the only master of Musical Theory, for example, there are others who have majored in this field as journeymen and achieved mastery also, but he is the only Musical Theory Master. All those who attain mastery may call themselves masterharper, as well as an additional title to illustrate their specialty if they have one (e.g. master of Musical Theory). There are also masters that have not specialised - known simply as masterharpers - who teach/supervise wherever Master Chase assigns.

A day in the life of a Southern Harper Hall Apprentice

~Apprentices, especially first and second turn, are the lowest ranked at the Hall. Please be sure to follow the instructions of any and all ranked higher than yourself, or in a position of authority over you. They all have the right to set down things for you to do or to call you on rule breaking.

~Your Dorm Parents or boarding cotholder are responsible for your whereabouts. Do not leave the grounds without their knowledge and permission.

~Swimming at the beach is allowed and encouraged. Just be sure to let someone know you've gone and always take a friend.

~Dorm Parents, cotholders, Masters and not to mention the Headwoman are very creative in the art of punishment. You might want to think twice before breaking Hall rules, for you surely will afterward.
