| The Long Way Home - Chapter 1 - by ziggy "Will you stop fidgeting?" Jason asked the annoying woman sitting next to him for the hundredth time. "These seats are too damn small." She muttered, throwing an irritated look at him. "You know, you couldve asked Sonny to let us use the jet. But no . . you book us commercial." "Brenda . . ." She ignored him, continuing her rant. "And any ordinary person that has a little extra money would have booked us first class . . . instead, you want to make my life hell by making us sit in economy. . ." He shook his head. Obviously she was hell-bent on getting this out of her system. " . . . Six lousy peanuts and 3 pretzels . . they call that trail mix. . ." Jason rubbed a hand over his eyes. "Excuse me? Waitress?" "Shes not a waitress, Brenda. This is a plane, not a restaurant." "Yeah. Whatever." She didnt spare him a glance. "Can I get a Jack and coke, please?" Great idea, Jason thought. Maybe if she got some alcohol in her system, shed shut up and be still. "Make it a double." He threw in. The stewardess nodded and headed back to the galley. She started scratching at a raised bump on her arm. "Lord knows what bit me in that god-forsaken jungle. You know, most people would have chosen a real hotel, not some hut with straw for a door . ." she was muttering again. He counted to ten. Soon. She had to shut up soon or he was going to lose it. "If you want to blame someone for your misery, Brenda, look in the mirror. We wouldnt have even made this damn trip if youd bothered to tell me that you werent going to sign the damn annulment papers!" he exploded. "Oh, this again! I didnt know until I had the damn pen in my hand! So now youre gonna get all bent out of shape over that again . . ." "If you would just shut up . . ." "Youre right. I dont even know what I was thinking. . . lets go back." He looked at her incredulously. "I mean, you want to be rid of me so bad . . lets just get them to turn the plane around . . ." Or get them to open the door so he could toss her out at thirty thousand feet, Jason thought. She craned her neck down the aisle. "Where is that drink?" "Ladies and gentleman, can I have your attention please?" the beeping of the intercom was the only thing that stopped Jason from wrapping his hands around her neck and squeezing. "Please dont panic, were having a little bit of a problem with the left engine, so were going to have to make an unscheduled landing. If you could put your trays up and return your seats to the upright positions - the captain has turned on the seatbelt sign. Well have a safe landing, we just need to get checked out by maintenance before continuing on with the flight." Brenda whipped her head around to glare at Jason. "Happy now?" His only response was to close his eyes and lean back against the seat. |
