A Little Bit About Morgan Drake Eckstein
Back to Morgan Drake Eckstein's Homepage
The man who would become Morgan Drake Eckstein was born in Nebraska. He likes to joke that with his moon in Scorpio and his Mercury in Leo, he had no choice but to become a writer. He knows better--the stars incline, they do not compel.

As a kid, his family moved around a lot. And they had both good and bad times; the bad times seemingly outnumbering the good. After his father lost his business, the family moved to Brush, Colorado.

The stress of his homelife, along with the responsibilty of being the oldest of eight kids, caused him to flunk out of high school. Not having a high school diploma, he first joined the military (leaving upon the accidental death of his father), and then worked in food service.

In 1991, he met Andrew W., a member of an independent branch of the Golden Dawn. He was initiated into the Grade of Neophyte in March 1992. It was during this time that he took the motto
Morgana Draconis, in part as defiance to his mother's opinions that both his choice of religion and profession (his desire to become a writer) were sins. A variation of this motto would become his penname.

During his time as a member of Hathoor Temple, he served in several offices. His last one was the position of Archive Officer (for which he was granted the Administrative Grade of 9=2), helping organize the lodge's archive. In late 1994, Hathoor Temple disbanded. He left the lodge with his Administrative Grade intact, and with an earned Grade of Adept Minor.

The years that followed the disbanding of Hathoor Temple, Morgan Drake Eckstein got involved in several of the groups that formed up in the occult shops of Denver, Colorado. He studied Norse Heathenry, herbalism, and took part in several pagan and wiccan based discussion groups.

In October 2000, a couple of people interested in studying the kabbalah of Golden Dawn came to him. They knew that he was a student of the tradition, due to his showing an interest in the Thelemic Golden Dawn (whose leader at that time was David Cherubim). Due to his past experiences with the system, he suggested a more Hermetic approach.

It was this suggestion that saw him become one of the founding members of Bast Temple (Golden Dawn in the Outer). Since its formation, he has served as an elected officer of the lodge.

In September 2005, the restaurant where he had worked for several years, and Morgan Drake Eckstein chose to get his GED. Deciding to become a college student at the age of forty-one, he started to go to the Community College of Denver during the Fall semester of 2006. In the Spring semester of 2007, he was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa (the two year college honor society).

Morgan Drake Eckstein is currently pursuing an Associate degree (English) while earning a living as a freelance writer. He lives with his girlfriend, Toni Penn (a potter), and several cats. Besides his involvement with Bast Temple, he also serves as a proctor for the
Sanctuary of Maat (Hermetic Order of the Stella Matutina).
